iPad on sale April 3rd

Just a quick update to say — the iPad will be available on April 3rd, which is a week later than the rumors. From Apple:

Apple® today announced that its magical and revolutionary iPad will be available in the US on Saturday, April 3, for Wi-Fi models and in late April for Wi-Fi + 3G models. In addition, all models of iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.

Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store (www.apple.com) or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store.

I’m happy there’s a pre-order option. I can see how it might be fun to camp out in line, but personally I want mine reserved for me.

(thanks to Steph for the info!)

  1. Just saw that and thought of you. I can’t quite justify it at the moment so will wait a generation or so, but look forward to hearing your adventures

    • I should resist, but I can’t. I’m going to sell my netbook — it hasn’t really worked out for what I need anyhow — but I freely admit it’s an indulgence.

  2. Yay! I guess we’ll be getting ours early in April too.

Just for your amusement, check this out.

Scroll down to the Jan 29th entry on “why I fear the iPad will disappoint”. Not that I’m saying it will disappoint, but I love how Patrick McLean takes apart language to help us understand exactly where companies are bullshitting us with their “techno” talk. I really enjoy his blog and his podcast.

  3. LOL. I usually avoid reading nay-sayer articles like those, though, whatever they’re about — IMHO *all* advertising and marketing is hype and bullpucky, really, no matter what the product is, so no point in picking any of it apart. And I think he’s a little melodramatic, as all such articles tend to be. I can’t say I agree with his word-theory. But entertaining, as you said.

Anyone selling anything these days is just trying to scam you, aren’t they? But I guess if Apple had come out and said, “The iPad is a new product of ours that Apple enthusiasts are going to totally want, some people will have no use for, and others will totally trash as not having the features they think it should”, it wouldn’t have gone over very well, even if it was the truth. I’d be all for it! But apparently I am not who most advertising is aimed at, heee.

  4. Too true!

I find him to be very entertaining on many subjects, not the least of which is his article, “the road to hell is paved with adverbs”. But very true about advertising – most companies embellish like crazy and don’t actually say much, the product has to stand on it’s own feet. If it does, you ignore the bullpucky and buy future products, as we do with Apple. 🙂

  5. I heard about this “iPad-killer” people were talking about. It’s like an iPad, but it’s got ports for a camera and other USB devices, it supports Flash so you can play all those cool internet games, and it multitasks for cheaper. It’s called a netbook. And it’s ALREADY ON SHELVES. I swear, “Shiny New Thing” Syndrome is going to kill America

  6. Netbooks don’t, as a rule, have touchscreens, however.

Chacun à son goût, as they say — to each their own. 🙂 People want different devices for different reasons.
