Giveaway: The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson, A Novel

W.W. Norton was recently kind enough to send me an advance copy of a new historical novel by Jerome Charyn, The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson. From the press release:

Charyn charts the entirety of Emily’s life — from her girlhood to her death — a life of which her literary career, which she herself tried to keep confined to an “invisible sphere,” was only one small part… Emily Dickinson’s genius is not confined to her verse, but must be sought in her whole life, through which she remained uncompromisingly true to herself — a feat no less difficult in late nineteenth-century New England than it is today.

To enter to win The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson, simply leave a comment on this post — the winner will be chosen on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 23 using random.org.

Edited to add: Thanks to everyone who participated!

  6. Hello…
Unable to buy books at the moment this would be a great treasure to me. x Emily, her soul, through her writing has been there for me through many times in my life, helping me to endure, through serious illness and the times I can only describe as Emily does so perfectly as ‘the loneliness one dare not sound.’ when I was completely alone for a very long time, out in the countryside… she gave me comfort and kept me company in the form of the one book I have of hers which a close friend gave to me as a present many years ago.

Whomever wins a copy of this beautiful book, I hope it will be truly cherished. It deserves to be, and I hope I have a chance among all the others. Thank you so much for the opportunity. x Good luck everyone. ♥

  7. This book would enlighten me as a person because I have always wanted to know more about Emily Dickinson as a poet. For Years, I have studied her work and when I got to college, there have been things that I have wondered about so many times and I would like to put this mystery of this woman to rest. Her poetry fascinates me as a scholar and I have always wanted to something of a dissertation that puts together the life of this woman in order to gain some kind of understanding of how she wrote her poetry. She was a revolutionary of her time, she used subtle pagan, earthly infuleneces in her writing however, she was also quite accepted in her society at a time when women didn’t exactly have respectable positions of office or authority, except through marriage. My hope is to be enlightened even more when a copy of this book is attained.
    Thank you.

  11. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away ” ~Hilary Cooper~
Emily Dickinson’s poetry takes my breath away. I’ve felt an affinity with Emily from the first time I read her poetry and searched out the story of her life. The author Jerome Charyn with his creation of “The Secret Life of Emily Dickinson” has taken a real person and transformed her into a fictional character revealing through her voice the internal secrets of her life. I’ve read this book by borrowing it from the local library, a place that I have not been able to set foot in for several years. Personal reasons prevented this but I braved through so that I could borrow this book. Since reading it I have wanted to add this book to my collection so that I could refer to it when ever the mood moved me. If I am chosen I will be very grateful for the gift.
